What is Holistic Nutrition?

Holistic, Integrative & Functional Health are all words to describe a focus on a natural, root cause approach to wellness. Unlike the conventional approach, holistic health is focused on the mind, body & spirit, a healthy diet as close to its natural state as possible, while considering the individual as a whole, including all aspects of one’s lifestyle. Emotional standing and attitude are part of our focus because both also have a dramatic effect on the overall health of an individual. The mind and body have the power to both heal and cause illness.

We all need a certain balance of protein, vitamins, and other nutrients to help our bodies reach maximum energy levels and overall physical and emotional health. The central point of holistic health is on achieving lasting changes that take habits, lifestyle, and biochemical individuality into account.

Holistic Nutritionists are highly trained and experienced health professionals in natural health and nutrition. Holistic Nutritionists devise diets that match each individual’s unique health and nutritional needs in addition to promoting optimal health of all body systems through a diet of good quality, whole foods (and at times high quality supplementation if and when needed).

As it deals with the body as a whole, holistic nutrition incorporates not only the body but also the mind and spirit as well.

Holistic Nutritionists also work alongside MDs, NDs, Homeopaths, Chiropractors, and other healthcare professionals to help people bring their bodies back into balance when facing illness. We are trained to understand how symptoms are caused by a complex web of underlying imbalances; we bring diet into the therapeutic mix and work to reverse those symptoms through cellular nourishment and lifestyle changes.

What Role Does a Holistic Nutritionist Play?

A Holistic Nutritionist or Nutrition Coach will address nutritional deficiencies and toxicities, design a program specifically for each client; taking into consideration such factors as height, weight, age, sex, genetics, level of exercise or physical activity, dietary goals, food preferences, sensitivities to specific foods and dietary habits while recommending food selection, meal plans, and preparation.

A few of the many reasons people work with a Holistic Nutritionist:

  • They have, or you suspect they have food allergies or intolerance

  • They have, or they suspect you have, yeast overgrowth (candida)

  • They have poor digestion (gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, cramping etc.)

  • They suffer from chronic pain

  • They have a gluten sensitivity

  • They suspect a food allergy

What’s the difference between a Holistic Nutritionist and a Dietitian?

A Holistic Nutritionist is quite similar to a dietitian, but also differs in many significant ways. Dietitians are trained institutionally, meaning they often work in institutions like hospitals, retirement home facilities, and other government run establishments. They are trained to follow and teach the Canada Food Guide when dealing with clients and/or meal plans, and work according to those guidelines. Much of their training is focused around meal planning for large volume food service – ie hospitals.

Holistic Nutritionists are trained intensively to understand the nutritional needs of the body with zero focus on the food guide. Instead the focus is on more of a bio-individuality approach recognizing the needs of the individual and tailoring a nutritional solution to fit those needs. Additionally, there is a focus on prevention, holistic living, environmental aspects to health, and a mind/body/spirit approach to bring the entire being back into balance.

Holistic Nutritionists are trained in a broad range of modalities alongside their standard nutritional training. To gain registration status, a Holistic Nutritionist requires a minimum of 2000 hours of nutrition education.  In addition to the extensive core human nutrition courses, they also must take courses such as anatomy & physiology, chemistry, advanced nutrition research, biochemistry, pathology, symptomatology, and disease prevention and management.
